Development of a novel heterogeneous Sensor System for CBRN Applications
Description:
EU-SENSE is a research and innovation project launched in May 2018, with a time duration of 36 months. The crucial innovation of the project is the development of a novel network of chemical sensors consisting of heterogeneous sensor nodes supported with cutting edge machine learning and dispersion modelling. The different chemical sensors converge into dedicated sensor nodes. The sensor node can operate with the following sensors: 2x Ion Mobility Spectrometer (AIRSENSE GDA-P) alternately with Electrochemical cell or Photoionization detector, Metal oxide sensors (TNO MO-sensor) and a Flame Photometric Detector (PROENGIN AP4C).
Each sensor node can wirelessly connect to the sensor network controller for data collection and preprocessing. The sensor network controller will transmit the data to the next level where data fusion, classification, identification, concentration estimation and alarming takes place. This level of data processing also includes machine learning of the environmental noise for false alarm rate reduction as well as a situation awareness (SA) tool. This application has a functional graphical user interface with sensor node visualization and a map download mechanism. The SA tool will also include computational tools for dispersion modelling and threat source estimation.
In this talk we will present the basic concept of EU-SENSE, the chemical sensor and sensor node setup. Also, we will present the results from laboratory and outdoor measurements. We will emphasize the advantages of the data fusion to boost the detection capabilities and the benefits regarding the false alarm rate. Results from the final demonstration and the ability to facilitate the work of the task forces will be shown. We will highlight how the EU-SENSE project and its innovations will improve the CBRNe capabilities and cover first responders existing technology gaps.
