Batch, Flow and Thin Layer Cells for Electroanalytical Applications using Screen Printed Electrodes
Description:
Design, fabrication, and applications of three novel cells for use with 3-electrode screen printed electrode chips (SPECs) are presented. The cells are for flow injection, thin-layer, and batch measurements and are designed to fit SPECs substrate of dimensions 10.3 mm width x 34 mm length x 0.5 mm thickness. The cells are constructed from acrylic. Each has a base and a transparent cover. The base of each cell has a cavity to house the SPEC. Whereas, the construction details of the clear acrylic cover determine the cell shape and type. The sensing part (i.e., Screen Printed Electrode, SPEs) of the SPEC was sealed with an O-ring and the base and cover of each cell were assembled by means of stainless-steel bolts. The cells provided a few common merits such as (i) no need for special electrical connection cable, (ii) the SPEC was completely contained within the cell body which eliminated the risk of its breakage, and (iii) fit large number of commercially available SPECs. The flow cell (FC) offered the advantages of convenient customization of the cell dead volume, and convenient visual inspection of the surface and the vicinity of SPEs. The universal batch cell (UBC) is very versatile and proved suitable for all batch applications in sample volumes ranging from 25 l to 40 mL including controlled hydrodynamic voltammetry with optional controlled temperature and atmosphere. Electrochemical measurements to demonstrate the merits and applicability of all cells are also presented.
