Systematic Evaluation of impact on Extraction Performance of Different Sorbents and Binders Applied in Solid Phase Microextraction Coatings: Fundamental Considerations and Experimental Verification
Description:
Up to date, many SPME coating sorbents have been developed, but it is crucial to emphasize besides sorbent, binder plays important role in analyte recovery. Binders are not only responsible to attach the sorbent to the support, but also to allow diffusion of analytes towards sorbent. However, little attention has been paid to the effect of binders on the extraction kinetics. The reported work provides important insights about the properties of the investigated binders and sorbents and their influences in extraction mechanisms. We provided a better understanding of how sorbent in binder impact extraction kinetics, thereby resolving any misunderstandings regarding the mass transfer process. The interaction between the binder and solid particles have been investigated for the first time. The polymer binder interacting with particles in the slurry plays a crucial role in constructing the internal configuration of coating. This work details a novel technique to understand, directly, the interaction behaviour between particles and binders, which is leading to a better understanding of the extraction mechanisms and the development of new expressions to predict particle-particle adhesion forces and binder distribution. We select the most commonly used binders including polydimethylsiloxane, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinylidene difluoride and polytetrafluoroethylene amorphous fluoroplastics (Teflon), as well as introduce a new binder of polybenzimidazole to synthetically evaluation the influence of binders. The incorporation of sorbents such as HLB and C18, provided optimal extraction coverage for a broad range of analytes. The results of this study provided the reference value for development of SPME coatings by selecting the optimal binder and the sorbent affinity for selected analytes. Finally, this work gives the scientific community the idea of what a good coating means by considering all parameters such as, kinetics, optimal binder and sorbent.
