Exploring Separations: Spectroscopy, Imaging and Theory
Description:
The proposed symposium will discuss the future directions of chemical separations in response to the National Academies’ report “A Research Agenda to Transform Separation Science”. Recognizing that the field of separation science is facing significant challenges, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Medicine convened a committee “New Era in Separation Science” in 2019 to study the state of chemical separations. In the summary report, the Academies discussed the existing gaps in knowledge and outlined the future directions in research to transform separation science. Our symposium will address these future research directions.
Joel Harris, winner of the ACS Analytical Chemistry Award, the chair of the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry from 2016-2017, has been studying nanoporous silica with Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy.
Christy Landes is studying interfacial phenomena in separation science using single-molecule spectroscopy and super-resolution imaging. She is the chair-elect of the ACS Division of Physical Chemistry and a senior editor of Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. She's a plenary speaker at HPLC 2022 Conference and the Gordon Research Conference on Chemical Separations 2022.
J. Ilja Siepmann is an expert on molecular dynamics simulation of the chromatographic interface and has brought theoretical insight into the molecular-level understanding of chromatography processes.
Daniel K. Swartz, a fellow of the American Chemical Society and the American Physical Society, and an associate editor of Langmuir, has been investigating the interactions between biological molecules and interfaces.
Max Lei Geng’s research group is the first to use confocal imaging to probe the fundamentals of molecular transport and visualize chromatography processes in real time. His work brought new insights into chromatography separations never available through existing analytical methods.
