Delta Dawn - the Next Generation of Cannabinoids?
Description:
Whether natural or synthetic, “new” cannabinoids are making their way into cannabis products. One of the most popular ones is d8-THC, derived from CBD. Adulterated hemp samples containing THC variants are increasing and there is a need to fully identify and quantify each of them. Including some THC isomers that exist as enantiomers. Not only to determine the THC content as a measure of the potency of these products. More importantly, these THC variants may have adverse health effects. If reactions of CBD to THC isomers are not carefully controlled, the reaction could be incomplete, or unknown side reaction products can be produced. Most laboratories are only monitoring delta-9 THC. This study develops a liquid chromatography mass spectrometry method that separates, identifies, and quantifies important isomers of THC as well as chiral separation of THC enantiomers.
Speaker: Eberhardt Kuhn - Shimadzu Scientific Instruments
Dr. Eberhardt Kuhn is the Senior Market Manager for Food, Cannabis, and Hemp at Shimadzu Scientific Instruments. He is a renowned chromatographer with over 30 years of experience in this field at companies like Restek, Agilent, and Bio-Rad. Dr. Kuhn has presented talks at conferences and events in 40 countries. His expertise is the field of chromatographic separations, column chemistry, and scientific instrumental analysis of food, including determination and identification of contaminants (pesticides, heavy metals, and Food Contact Materials, such as PFAS), food quality, food adulteration and confirmation of food authenticity, and general analytical method development. His recent interests focus on all aspects of cannabis and hemp analytics, from potency to terpenes to contamination (pesticides, residual solvents, metals), as well as educating the public on the countless benefits of hemp and cannabis.
