Potentiometric monitoring of active emulsion droplets and supramolecular amphiphiles in magnetic levitation device
Description:
Potentiometric ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) and magnetic levitation (MagLev) individually have played important roles in addressing many analytical chemistry questions. ISEs offer exceptional selectivity for the direct detection of ions of interest in complex biological matrices. Magnetic levitation has also been successfully implemented into a variety of analytical pursuits (i.e., separation, measurement, and analysis of a wide range of materials and biosystems). The merging of these two techniques (i.e., ISEs and MagLev) is surprisingly uncommon, although they are ideally matched to make important contributions toward challenging analytical problems. In this work, we will integrate ion-selective electrodes with a magnetic levitation device to exploit this dual read-out (continuous monitoring of ionic concentration and density) for studying challenging chemical and biological problems (e.g. interfacial enzyme kinetics, active emulsion droplets, and ion transfer reaction across immiscible phases) towards novel analytical applications. One of the advantages of this proposed dual-readout system would be that both techniques are portable, require minimal energy to use, and the electrical signal is easily readable on a smartphone.
