Raman microscopy is now well established as one of the most powerful and versatile techniques for a diverse range of applications in both research and analytical laboratories. The unique advantage of Raman microscopy is the ability to noninvasively characterize chemically complex and spatially inhomogeneous samples with a sub-micron spatial resolution.
Modern confocal Raman scanning microscopy, which allows one to obtain two- and three-dimensional spectrochemical images of samples in various states and forms, has become an indispensable research method for scientific communities, from physicists to chemists, to criminalists, to geologists, to biologists, to medics, etc.
The purpose of this course is to familiarize a wide circle of experimenters with the fundamentals and applications of modern Raman microscopy and imaging. The basics of Raman spectroscopy, instrumentation, principles of operation, and the main characteristics of Raman microscopes will be presented in the course. It will highlight the key practical aspects of the instrument performance and experimental design that should be taken into consideration when characterizing microscale objects using Raman microscopy. The essential relationships between the spectral measurement parameters are considered theoretically and illustrated experimentally. Examples of Raman microscopy and imaging application for the characterization of spatial structure, composition, and properties of “real world” samples and objects with the emphasis on the studies of nanomaterials, semiconductors, polymers, and pharmaceuticals will be provided.

Instructor: Alexander Rzhevskii - Thermo Fisher Scientific
Biography: Dr. Alexander Rzhevskii graduated from Belarus State University and received Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics from the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (Minsk, Belarus). After moving to the USA in 1998, he has worked as a research scientist at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Worcester, MA) and then occupied product manager and application specialist positions at a number of leading providers of molecular spectroscopy solutions and instrumentations, including Midac, Digilab, and Varian. Since 2008 he works as a Raman Applications Scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific. For more than 30 years, he has provided technical support, consulting, and training to the users of high-end Raman and FTIR instruments. He is an expert in Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, microscopy, and spectrochemical imaging. Alexander Rzhevskii is the author of the “Modern Raman Microscopy: Technique and Practice” monograph (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, published 06/16/2021, ISBN: 9781527567849).

Learning Objectives:
It is important to understand the relationships between the measurement parameters, their limitations, and specimen details. By attending the course, experimenters will be able to select the optimal instrument configuration and adjust the measurement parameters to achieve the maximum quality of spectral data with a reasonable analysis time.
